An integrated study of the Mpenjati estuary-beach program. (Biological component) Abstract

A study was carried out to get the abundances of animal creatures between both sides of the Mpenjati estuary. Zooplankton, Macro fauna, Meiofauna and Fish was sampled. All the species that reside in the estuary help the diversity of the area and therefore are essentially driving forces, guaranteeing optimal performing of the ecosystem. The purpose of sampling such ecosystems is to learn how the communications amongst these types of organisms display a relationship towards environmental conditions and how they could be affecting the estuary in the abundances that they are identified. Samples was collected in different sample stations were it was collected and branded for further analyse in a laboratory at the University of KwaZulu Natal. Distinct sampling strategies were used, which was designed effectively to get different types of organisms. A die net was used to collect fish in the estuary side and a smolder net around the beach side. An Ekman grab was used to collect the sediment that possessed macro fauna plus the meiofauna samples was taken out from crud corers respectively. Zooplankton was sieved and collected by using a 200 micron mesh in the high energy swash zone. The results revealed a great variant of species within the estuary system. Outcomes showed that calanoid copepods were in great plethora on the beach side accounting for eighty five percent from the zooplankton measured. Nematodes were the only species found in the meiofaunal selections. There was 34. 18 ind. m2 of macrofauna.
